American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on this day in 1960 in Brooklyn, NY. He began his career as a street-smart graffiti artist, who worked under the pseudonym SAMO, and successfully crossed over to the international art gallery circuit. In only a matter of years, Basquiat rose to become one of the most celebrated Neo-Expressionist artists of his time, working with the likes of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.🎈🎉🎂HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BASQUIAT!
This past semester, the VAA department had the pleasure of hosting Chaédria LaBouvier – writer, activist, and Basquiat scholar - in Professor Amy Whitaker's thesis research class. LaBouvier is also a contributing writer for Elle.com and New York Magazine.
