  OCTOBER 2016 EVENTS Vegas Valley Book Festival Saturday, Oct. 15, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free and open to the public. Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St., 702-229-6469 Celebrity authors across all genres, ages, and cultural backgrounds will share their work and creative processes starting at 10 a.m.at the Historic Fifth Street School, located at 401 S. Fourth St. Then at 5:30 p.m., the Festival’s After-Dark event moves to the Inspire Theater, located on the corner of historic Fremont Street at 107 Las Vegas Blvd. South, for an evening of libations, a mind-opening talk with MacArthur Genius Award recipient Katherine Boo, and lively conversations into the night. Festival attendees will enjoy books signings, readings, workshops, vendor exhibits, and other special programs. Local food trucks also will be on hand to provide fuel for inquisitive minds. The children’s side of the Vegas Valley Book Festival features live music, crafts, performances, special bilingual entertainment, bookmaking and presentations from renowned authors and illustrators of children’s books. The Pahrump Arts Council Awarded $10,000 Grant

The Pahrump Arts Council (PAC) has been awarded a $10,000 matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support its 2015-16 Youth Arts   program. The NEA is the federal agency that supports and funds the arts to give all Americans the opportunity to experience creativity and participate in the arts. NEA programs and funding support thousands of activities in communities large and small across the country, including about 30,000 performances and 3,000 exhibitions annually. Keeper of Wheeler Well Books

The three books in the series about our own community are available at the Pahrump Art Gallery:  “The Keeper’s Plant Guide West Side of the  Spring Mountains”  ($15) covers more than 100 plants found in the area, with color photos and information for each one.  “The Keeper of Wheeler Well” ($10) tells the story of Dick Senior and his adventures in the Spring Mountains, suitable for 4th grade and up.  “A Day With the Keeper” ($10) continues the story, suitable for younger children.  The books were created by PAC members with a grant from the Mt. Charleston license plate program. All proceeds benefit PACs Youth Arts program directly so lend your support today by purchasing a book and get an insight into the world around you!
