On February 20 the Nye County semi-final for the national poetry recitation contest Poetry Out Loud took place at Beatty High School. Several Pahrumpians made the trip, including John Salacan, Asya Ivanova, Muriel Areno and Dick Senior to support PVHS senior Jennifer Simon. Jennifer won the 2012 local round in Pahrump and took third place in the state competition last year.

The contestants this year included three Beatty High students along with Jennifer Simon once again. It was a very nice event, with musical interludes from talented Beatty teens, and refreshments. All the participants performed well, but Jennifer took first place once again. She will be going to Reno for the state final on March 16.
