MISSION & OBJECTIVE

It is our sincere wish to provide a showcase for both veteran filmmakers and budding talent at home and abroad in a celebration of unique vision and creativity.

The High Desert Shorts International Film-Art-Wine & Music Festival is a four-day celebration of the arts in Pahrump, Nevada. Join us at the Sanders Family Winery on Thursday, May 23, 2013 for the opening event of world music—a Latin Extravaganza, fine wine and a juried art exhibition and competition. Admission to this event is $10 per person.
The 8th Annual High Desert Shorts International Film Festival® begins on Friday, May 24, 2013 at the Pahrump Nugget with a program of short films from across the world. The competition allows all filmmakers in attendance to have an opportunity to field audience questions during Q & A sessions. The audiences are traditionally very supportive and love the interaction. Admission to each film event is $3 per person.

They also relish the opportunity to vote for their favorite film after each program. The audience enjoys the method for this. They are given a stone as they enter each program and as they leave after enjoying the show, may vote by finding the popcorn box marked with the film title they liked best and placing their stone in that popcorn box.

On Saturday morning we will host a book signing event for our featured author, filmmaker Jack Truman. Dixie Publishing has just released Jack’s new filmmaking book; No Budget Filmmaking or How To Be a Well Known Filmmaker and Be Broke at the Same Time. Jack will present a reading and a Q & A with the audience followed by a book signing.
This will be followed immediately by a press event for the filmmakers on the red carpet that is located at the Pahrump Nugget Event Center. Participation in both of these events is free.

The Saturday portion of the film competition begins immediately after these two events, carrying on the same format.
Admission to each film event is $3 per person.

The Sunday award event doors open at 5 with the ceremony from 6-8. There are first place awards in each of four categories for 2013: Animation, Comedy, Drama and Horror/Science Fiction in addition to the Audience Favorite. 2012 saw the first awards for Best Actor, Best Score, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography, and these additions were well received and will continue. Participation in this event is free.

There will be an After-Party held at and catered by the Nye Communities Coalition. The public is invited to mix and mingle with the filmmakers, authors and artists, enjoy the food and celebrate the arts in Pahrump for the 8th consecutive year.
Admission to this event is $10 per person.

Tickets are available to purchase now at Sanders Family Winery (only) for the opening Art, Wine, and Music Event on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

Advance tickets for all other Film Festival Events will be available for purchase at the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce as of May 1, 2013.

Tickets will also be available at the door during the event.

The winning poster (below) for 2013 was designed by
Paige Warren.

We sadly lost one of our members, Babs Davis, on March 15th and several members bid her farewell at a service in Boulder City on April 11th.

National Quilting Day was March 16th and if we needed a reason to sit down and quilt, that’s a good one.

On March 21st we had one of our famous quarterly potlucks at the monthly all-dayer and it lived up to its reputation with a wonderful variety of foods. We eat all day and even manage to get in a little sewing and learning without naps. Lonna Ahrendt offered a binding demo, Sally Folmar offered a demo on appliqué using mylar, and Judy Toll led a beginners quilt class using 9-patch blocks.

At the April all-dayer, Jennifer Baggett led a class in paper-piecing. There were 20 quilters signed up and the machines were humming all day with beautiful results. Congratulations to everyone who mastered this technique. Judy Toll has done a terrific job of chairing the Program Committee and has scheduled many demos and classes to help all of us continue to expand our knowledge of quilting techniques. During the May all-dayer (5/16), Lonna will teach a pillowcase class and we’ll make colorful pillowcases to donate to the local nursing homes and elder residential facilities, using many yards of fabric donated by Sarah Vine, a local quilter who passed away recently.

The Desert Quilters of Nevada will hold their annual quilt show at the Henderson Convention Center on April 26-28 at which we will debut our 2014 opportunity quilt and begin ticket sales. This beautiful quilt featuring appliqué wildflowers, led to our show theme “Walk on the Wild Side.”

Our 18th annual Quilt & Fiber Arts Show is scheduled for Feb 21-22, 2014 and will be held at the Pahrump Event Center, 1261 E. Calvada Blvd (the old Skate Zone). We are excited about this venue as it is so much larger and is smoke free. We are looking forward to offering a much expanded show next year.

Hello, my “Art Peeps!” This will be our last issue until September, so I have lots of pictures to get in. You all have been busy, indeed. We had our April meeting at the museum and took names of members wanting to be officers for next season. During the second half of the meeting, Monda Eagan gave a very interesting demonstration of her techniques for painting on fabric. Fabulous! I think we, as artists, should all hand paint some of our clothes. One of a kind clothing PLUS a walking ad for your artwork! S’all good! She really does some beautiful stuff and will probably be holding a workshop next season.

Some of us took paintings and easels to help decorate the PAC HIGH DESERT CHORALE SPRING CONCERT at the Nugget and also the Red Hats luncheon “Evening in Paris” at the Nye Coalition center. Thanks to all who brought their paintings and photos. Participating in these functions brings publicity to our group, especially since Charlise had the brilliant idea of asking for an announcement about us from the MC’s. We even got a blurb in the Chorale program.

We’re getting geared up for our first annual “SPRING ART SHOW” to be held on May 17th and 18th. We will be exhibiting behind the Art Gallery from 10am to 6pm.

There will be a few artists painting, and a raffle each day for original artwork donated by participating artists. The Lions Club will be our food vendor. It’s only $10.00 to have a space for the two days and no commission from any sales you make. This show is limited to two dimensional pieces, paintings, photographs, and drawings. If you are interested in being a participant, call George Wilson at 751-4735. Please stop by either day, say hello and
have a hot dog.

A poster contest was announced for Art and Sol. The winning entry will be used on the event program cover and in the advertising, and the winning artist will receive $200.00.

The theme for the contest this year is “ART UNCORKED.”

Doris Smith announced that she will be in charge of a brand new juried art show to be held in conjunction with the “High Desert Shorts International Film Festival” May 23rd to May 26th at The Sanders Family Winery. For more information about the show, contact Doris at 537-6136 or visit www.highdesertshortsiff.com.

I have included some pictures of Melvena Robichaux’s camper truck (on the right). She and hubby bought an older camper, refurbished and painted it and then she painted murals on it. It’s beautiful and I’m sure she gets many comments about it. Good work, Melvena.

Charlise Butler held a watercolor class on May 4th at the library. It was, of course, SOLD OUT as she is a wonderful artist and has a lot to teach us.
I have included some pictures of the beautiful pieces that came out of Terry Harvey’s Spot Batik workshop. Well worth the effort, I say.

At our next meeting in May we will have David Squire talking to us about doing artistic work with metals. Our June meeting will be our Pot Luck luncheon, and then we will have to live without each other until we start up again in two months.

I finished the wall mural in the museum and have included a picture on page 6. Everyone seems to be pleased with it. I loved being in the museum doing this painting. If you have never explored our museum you really should. It’s quite impressive and the people who run the place are charming and helpful and very knowledgeable about history and this area of the world. It’s really worth seeing.
Our “featured artist” this Quarter is Lisa Mays.

Lisa was born in California but has lived in Nevada since she was six years old. Her father was with the Nevada Highway Patrol and they moved all over the state when she was young. She has lived in Carson City, Las Vegas, Tonopah, Wells, Reno, Cold Springs and Spring Creek. Lisa and her husband moved to Pahrump almost nine years ago.

Lisa says she has never considered herself an artistic person, just creative, with a love of taking a conceptual idea and molding it into a tangible thing of beauty. Her love of photography developed throughout her childhood and teen years.

Lisa started her business, FLUTTERBYS PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORIES, in 2010. As a freelance photographer she shoots weddings, family portraits, senior portraits and school pictures. Although her greatest fascination is with macro photography, she states: “The closer I can get to photograph something tiny and beautiful, the better.”
